The United States’ first net-zero community is coming soon to Arvada Colorado! Dubbed Geos, the development will employ a sterling roster of alternative energy strategies to cut its consumption fossil fuels and become completely self-sustainable. Lately we’ve seen a slew of similar communities springing up around the world, from Canada to India to Estonia and we couldn’t be happier, since it’s future-forward communities such as these that are paving the pathway to a brighter future.

The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has completed the Masterplan of Waterfront City, a city to be built from scratch by Nakheel in Dubai. Waterfront City will form a vibrant centre for the larger 140,000,000 m2 Waterfront development. Waterfront is Dubai’s largest development to date providing homes for a prospective 1.5 million new inhabitants, effectively doubling Dubai’s population and creating one million jobs.
Just when you thought development in the United Arab Emirates couldn’t get any crazier, here comes a new UAE eco-city to rival Masdar. Intended to be entirely sustainable and cater to residents’ every conceivable whim within its four walls, the new Ras al Khaimah eco city development in the United Arab Emirates, design by Rem Koolhaas’s OMA office, is often likened to that of the zero-carbon, zero-waste Masdar. Cutting-edge solar technology will power the 1.2 million square meter city, built using locally-sourced Arabian materials and aesthetic styles to support the city’s overall ethos of sustainability. Leave it to Rem to design something so grand it could possibly upstage Masdar- we’ll see how it unfolds!

NYC's Governors Island revitalization competition, also called Park at the Center of the World, has just named the winning proposal designed by the West 8, Rogers Marvel, Diller Scofidio & Renfro, Quennel Rothschild, and SMWM team. The revamping of over 90 acres of land includes plans for a promenade and park featuring playgrounds, sports fields, ecological environments, open park space, an amphitheater, and--get this--hills created from preexisting buildings on the island! Awesome! The proposal even includes plans to integrate free bicycle rentals for visitors to use while exploring the island. (Yesss!) The Great Promenade will make the waterfront a true destination, offering a new perspective and sprawling views of Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.
An ongoing project concerning cities, urban change, design and the environment, Magical Urbanism is maintained by Mike Ernst. This website was previously used to document my experiences as a staff member on a study abroad trip to Argentina, China and India. Now it'll mostly be about things related to my grad school program in Urban Design at UC Berkeley [...]
