DNH is an open civic forum and resource on Downtown New Haven, Connecticut. Our mission is to promote dialogue on topics including economic development, architecture and design, transportation, livable streets, history, downtown events, and the Route 34 Corridor.
As students return to campuses across the country for the start of another semester, colleges are starting to showcase some serious strides in sustainability. Some are investing in wind power and other alternative energies to help lower their carbon footprint, while others are endeavoring to green their facilities. Penn State is leading the charge with its gorgeous LEED Gold Stuckeman School of Architecture.

The United States’ first net-zero community is coming soon to Arvada Colorado! Dubbed Geos, the development will employ a sterling roster of alternative energy strategies to cut its consumption fossil fuels and become completely self-sustainable. Lately we’ve seen a slew of similar communities springing up around the world, from Canada to India to Estonia and we couldn’t be happier, since it’s future-forward communities such as these that are paving the pathway to a brighter future.
DesignLAB’s recently completed headquarters for the International Fund for Animal Welfare goes far beyond integrating into its environment to actually ameliorate a contaminated brownfield site, infusing it with renewed life. A stunning example of modern architecture, the 54,000 square foot structure is situated in Yarmouthport, Massachusetts and showcases an exceptional roster of sustainable building strategies that have earned it a LEED gold rating.
Once again Inhabitat tipped us on green news, and a very important one when it comes to buildings: the state of California unanimously approved a statewide green building code. The code will enter in full effect in 2010, to give industry and enforcement agencies the time to prepare for the new building standards.
The stunning 700 Palms Residence is a prime example of site-specific architecture. Designed by Steven Ehrlich Architects, the striking structure mixes raw industrial materials with a polished modern aesthetic, making it a monument to eponymous SoCal style and a sustainable marvel in its own right. Its breezy construction seamlessly integrates outdoor spaces with a flowing interior floor plan that was carefully considered to address the freedoms and constraints of residential design in Venice, Los Angeles.
I've noticed the Maison EvolutiV of late and it's quite the interesting home. Designed by Olgga Architects as a show house for the Salon Europeen du Bois, this energy-efficient home presents a compelling view of what can be done with only two modules. The ground module is flush with the outdoors and features a skin made of chestnut stakes of various sizes. The second module juts out over the first and provides a nice little spot for a green roof area. In addition, the home features a rainwater recovery system, wool wood insulation coupled with cellulose, solar panels, and a low-energy passive house design.
