Passive solar design meets pointillist pincushion in this stunning porcupine-inspired office recently cleared for construction in Prestons, England. Designed by UK-based Moxon Architects, the building features a bristling brise-soleil composed of andonized aluminum fins suspended from tensile rods. This striking facade acts as a rain screen while filtering sunlight and contributing to the building’s energy-efficient profile.

019.09 Apartment house in Tatari street / JVR Arhitektuuribüroo | Arch Daily

The apartment house finds itself in the very city centre, at close quarters of the main square of Tallinn, Vabaduse square. These were the quartes where the dashing building and city planning activities stopped in the end of 1930s because of the war and it stopped for decades, for the whole period of soviet power in Estonia. Today we can find here the small wooden houses from the turn of the 19/20th centuries side by side with the scheme of consistent street walls carried through during the first period of independence.

Ausgegangen sind diese groben Veraenderungen des Stadtraums immer von einer Vision - und sei es nur die Vision den Aufstand der Unterschicht zu unterbinden. Nun koenne 10 Architekturbueros ihre Vision von einem Paris der Zukunft im Musee de la Cite praesentieren. Da sollte man fast mal nach Paris reisen…

The 0-14 Office Building is currently under construction in Dubai, the building is one of the most exciting projects to come out of Dubai in recent years. The 16 inch concrete facade is punctuated by 1,326 holes. The buildings unique aesthetic character stands out from the usually slick, curtain-walled buildings of Dubai. The iconic skin allows the 22 storey building to be column free.

Although there is no standard dimensions for containers the 40 ft (12 m) container is the most popular container worldwide and is typically 8 ft wide by 8'6 high. When Steven Holl Architects announced this week that it had won a competition to design a corporate master plan in China's southern financial capital Shenzhen, near a new tower by OMA, it immediately raised some eyebrows. Drammen is a city and municipality in Norway (look it up!) which is along the 1,890 km (1,174 mi) long European Route E18. The city of Drammen has been, of recent years, a relatively popular place for the cars; its city center having been burdened by heavy traffic until the installation of the E18 bridge. Designer Fredrik Haukeland plans to capitalize on this situation with an intuitive I.D. project: “a leisure park for car fanatics.”

I got to meet L.E.FT when we interviewed them at their office in New York back in September, 2008. This practice is lead by three partners, Makram el Kadi, Ziad Jamaleddine and Naji Moujaes. They all graduated in Beirut between 1995 and 1997, and then got their masters at Parsons, Harvard and SCI-Arc, respectively. After that, they worked on big practices such as Massimiliano Fuksas and Steven Holl Architects, and then founded L.E.FT in 2001.

With a sleek and minimalist approach to adaptable living, here’s a sophisticated house that likes to “travel”. Located in a rural site in Suffolk, England, and dubbed the Sliding House, it has mobile walls and a roof that glides along rails to cover and uncover the static parts of the 28 meters long dwelling. Work of London-based architects from dRMM, the ingenious design alters views, lighting conditions and the sense of enclosure inside. Though it’s not the home of our dreams, it’s an amazing exercise of design with a stunning outcome. Our only concern is about the cost. Looks expensive, doesn’t it? [via Dezeen]

Construction did not start until 2006.The complex not only features a shopping mall, but also a conference-hotel, a cineplex, elderly people housing and a spa. The whole development at the western most part of the city of Berne will complete a dense housing development started in the seventies and when completed will offer housing to additional 3000 people.The shoppingcenter is said to cater an area with around 1.2 Million people sourrounding the city of Berne.More images in myflickr-set of the Westside shopping Center.

All week, rumours have been flying around the internet that DR had gone out of business. CR can confirm that it is true. On Tuesday this week, the business was closed with nine staff being made redundant. According to its founder, Ian Anderson, the studio became insolvent due to a combination of factors: “We’d lost a couple of clients, didn’t win a couple of pitches, got a tax bill which should have been sorted out and wasn’t and a major client who didn’t pay the money they owed us – in themselves any of those things would have been fine but when they come all at once there’s not much you can do.”

The T-Bone House, designed by COAST, is located near the German town of Waiblingen. It has all those earth-friendly features, like geothermal heating and a rain water recycling system. It also has great views of the surrounding countryside. So, if it’s so environmental, why does the home have a glass garage that draws the focus to an antiquated form of energy consumption? Because the car in that particular garage is a 1974 Porsche Targa, the homeowner’s pride and joy. Via.
